1907-Born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico to Manuel
and Herlinda Torres de Medellin.
1920-Moved to San Antonio, Texas. His father returns
to Mexico and dies a victim of the revolution.
1921-Octavio manages to pay for instruction in the
Sna Antonio School of Art.
1923-1926-Attends night classes in painting in the
San Antonio School of Art.
1929-In Chicago, Octavio works as a busboy at the
Palmer House to pay for his night classes at the Chicago Art
Institute.
1929-Denied admission to the Art Academy because
of his lack of formal training, he traveled to the small villages
of Mexico, studying native and primitive crafts.
1931-Returns to the US and marries Consuelo Padilla
(MaMa).
1934-With a group of San Antonio artists found La
Vallita Art Gallery.
1934-1937-He teaches sculpture at the Witte Museum
of Art and at La Villita Art Gallery.
1938-1942-Was Invited to North Texas State College,
Denton where he remained for 5 years as sculptor in residence.

1942- During WWII, worked as a plaster pattern maker.
His exact and precise knowledge of making plaster molds was vital
to the manufacture of airplanes.
1945- Joined staff at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts,
where he taught sculpture, ceramics and mosaics for 21 years.
1946-1947-Was a lecturer on the teaching staff of
SMU.
1962-1966-Instructed art majors from SMU in his studio
at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts.
1964-Established a sculpture studio at Mendochino
Art Center at Mendochino, California.
1966-1979-Founds the Medellin School of Sculpture.
He teaches classes for beginners and advanced students doing
work in all media.
1979- Semi-retires and moves with his wife to Bandera,
Tx.
1997-Moves back to Dallas.
April 1, 1999- Passes away at the age of 93. Survived
by Consuelo Medellin, Sergio Medellin, Ronaldo Medellin, Patricia
McDonald, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
